Children's Mobility, Health and Happiness:
a Canadian School Travel Planning Model Media Release and Background Information
School Travel Planning brings together community stakeholders to identify barriers to active transportation for each school and develop a written action plan. The expansion of School Travel Planning for 2009-2010 in Canada is made possible through financial contributions from the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer’s CLASP initiative, which stands for Coalitions Linking Action and Science for Prevention, the Public Health Agency of Canada and George Weston Limited/Loblaw Companies Limited. The views expressed herein do not necessarily represent the views of these funders. Based on the experience gained during an initial Canadian pilot test of School Travel Planning
This is still a pilot project and Green Communities Canada is gathering feedback from participants on the effectiveness of these tools. Children's Mobility, Health and Happiness: a Canadian School Travel Planning Model is a two-year project funded through the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer’s CLASP initiative and the Public Health Agency of Canada. This project will expand STP across Canada, amplify our work with the University of Toronto on links between STP and the built environment, and introduce and apply Cape Breton University’s ground-breaking research into the links between active transportation, sustainable happiness, education and health. In addition, the 2.5-year Stepping It Up pilot project in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is now underway. The project is centrally coordinated by Metrolinx and is supported by Transport Canada’s ecoMOBILITY program. By the project's end, school travel planning will be introduced by City of Hamilton and Region of Peel staff at up to 30 local elementary schools, with expertise and support from Green Communities Canada and the University of Toronto. Visit the Stepping it Up webpage to learn more. |
