School Travel PlanningSchool Travel Planning brings together community stakeholders to identify barriers to active transportation for each school and develop a written action plan. As a first step towards adoption of School Travel Planning in Canada, Green Communities prepared two reports, based on extensive international research into other similar models. This phase of the project was supported by Transport Canada's Moving on Sustainable Transportation (MOST) initiative.
The expansion of School Travel Planning for 2009-2010 in Canada is made possible through financial contributions from the Public Health Agency of Canada and George Weston Limited/Loblaw Companies Limited. The views expressed herein do not necessarily represent the views of the Public Health Agency of Canada or George Weston Limited/Loblaw Companies Limited. Based on the experience gained during the Canadian pilot test of School Travel Planning that took place from November 2007 through March 2009, a comprehensive toolkit has been developed to assist with establishing a School Travel Planning program. This is still a pilot project and Green Communities Canada is gathering feedback from participants on the effectiveness of these tools. If you would like access to the toolkit please click here to send us an email request. We will respond promptly to requests and forward you the necessary password to access the toolkit here. School travel planning efforts continue to grow in Ontario, with the 2.5-year Stepping it Up pilot project in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The project is centrally coordinated by Metrolinx and is supported by Transport Canada’s ecoMOBILITY program. By the project's end, school travel planning will be introduced by City of Hamilton and Region of Peel staff at up to 30 local elementary schools, with expertise and support from Green Communities Canada and the University of Toronto. Visit the Stepping it Up webpage to learn more. |
