Ideas for High Schools
Green Communities Canada has adapted the Active & Safe Routes to School program for high schools and we created a separate web site for them at http://www.ywalk.ca. Resources on this site were developed through a series of High School projects, including: STEP (Sustainable Transportation Education Program), a pilot program in both urban and rural (Peterborough, Markham and Toronto); and YWALK Youth Forum 2007, as part of the Walk21 Toronto 2007 conference held October 1-4 (http://www.ywalk.ca).
The resources on the YWALK web site have been designed by students and teachers to help secondary schools get walking, biking, blading, boarding, bussing and carpooling. Use these resources to address:
- traffic congestion around schools at drop-off and pick-up times
- parking issues on school property
- physical inactivity of students
- pedestrian and cyclist safety
- lack of youth friendly transit
- air quality problems
