The Algoma District is a vast northern geographical area which covers approximately 48,737.22 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 118,567. It is bordered on the west by Lake Superior and along the south by the North Channel of Lake Huron. Areas covered include Sault Ste. Marie, Blind River, Elliot Lake and Wawa.

Sault Ste. Marie, with a population of 75,000, has several schools participating in the ASRTS program. The Algoma Health Unit is the champion for ASRTS and is promoting a school walking club and pedometer loaning program to schools across the district.

Brant County encompasses the municipalities of: Brantford, Paris, St. George, Burford, Mount Pleasant and Scotland. The population of the county is approximately 90,000. The school districts are covered by two boards: the Grand Erie District School Board and the Brant/Haldimand-Norfolk Catholic District School Board for a total elementary and middle school student population of 16,000. There are also seven private schools in the county.

Durham Region lies immediately to the east of the City of Toronto within the Greater Toronto Area and encompasses an area of approximately 2,590 square kilometres (1,000 square miles) with a population of approximately 531,000. The school districts are Durham District School Board, Durham Catholic District School Board and Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board for a total of 65,000 students in 145 elementary schools. Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott and Russell counties are located east of Ottawa to the Quebec border and south of Ottawa to the St. Lawrence River. They are made up of 15 municipalities, the largest being Cornwall, Hawkesbury, and Rockland. The population of the 5 counties is approximately 185,000 of which 40% have French as their mother tongue. The school districts are covered by four boards: the Upper Canada District School Board, le Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l'est de l'Ontario, The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, and le Conseil des écoles publiques de l'est de l'Ontario. Halton Region is comprised of four municipalities: Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville with a combined population of 430,000. The school districts are Halton District School Board (HDSB) and Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) with a combined total of 117 elementary schools and 56,000 students. This year (2009/2010), after a successful ASRTS pilot project, the HDSB decided to expand the ASRTS program to 25 elementary schools. Accepting an invitation to join the project, the HCDSB will be introducing the program to 5 elementary schools. A Project Manager has been assigned to oversee the project. Hamilton has a population of approximately 503,000. The school districts are covered by two boards: Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board for a total elementary and middle school student population of approximately 59,230. There are also 23 private schools in the city and 3 French Language Schools.

The City of Kingston, which also includes the communities of Kingston Township and Pittsburgh Township, has a population of 113,000. The school districts are Limestone District School Board and Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board with a combined elementary student population of approximately 26,000 in 91 schools. Active & Safe Routes to School is supported by the KFL&A Public Health KFL&A Health Unit.

Waterloo Region is comprised of the three municipalities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge, plus the four townships of Woolwich, Wellesley, North Dumfries, and Wilmot. The population of Waterloo Region is over 500,000. The majority of schools are part of either the Waterloo Region District School Board (98 elementary schools, 15 secondary schools) or Waterloo Catholic District School Board (47 elementary school, 5 secondary schools). In addition, Waterloo Region has 4 French schools and 11 private schools. In total, there are over 90,000 elementary and secondary school students in Waterloo Region.

Active & Safe Routes to School in Waterloo Region is coordinated by the Active Transportation to School Workgroup of Together 4 Health and is funded by Together 4 Health through the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion.

The London and Area Active & Safe Routes to School program involves primarily the City of London, with a population of approximately 336,500. Nearby communities of St. Thomas, Woodstock, and the counties of Middlesex, Elgin and Norfolk add up to a combined population of 579,644 in the region. This area is covered by the Thames Valley District School Board and the London Catholic District School Board for a combined student population of 71,000 in 206 elementary schools. There are also 7 private schools in the area.

London and Area Active & Safe Routes to School is a joint project of Thames Region Ecological Association, the Middlesex-London Health Unit, the London District Catholic School Board, the Thames Valley District School Board, City of London, London Police Service, Community Safety & Crime Prevention Advisory Committee for the City of London, Community Council of White Oaks, London Block Parent Program.

The Region of Niagara comprises 12 municipalities for a total population of 382,430. With a population of 785,000, Ottawa is served by four school boards: Ottawa Carleton District School Board (116 schools), Ottawa Carleton Catholic District School Board (63), Conseil des écoles publiques de l'est de l'Ontario (20), Conseils des écoles catholiques de langue française (14) for an approximate total student population of 80,000 in 200 elementary schools.

The Region of Peel is comprised of the communities of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon, for a combined population of 1 million. The region is served by the Peel District School Board and Dufferin Peel District School Board with 297 elementary schools for a student population of approximately 158,000. The Safe & Active Routes to School program is a joint project of the Region of Peel, Peel Regional Health Unit, City of Mississauga, the City of Brampton, Peel District School Board, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District Board and Peel Regional Police.

Perth District Health Unit

The population of the Peterborough area is 125,000 and it includes Peterborough along with the communities of: Apsley, Bailieboro, Bridgenorth, Buckhorn, Cavan, Curve Lake, Douro, Ennismore, Havelock, Keene, Lakefield, Millbrook, Norwood, Warsaw, and Young's Point. The school districts serving this area are Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board and 13 private schools for a total of 68 elementary schools and 11 high schools.

The Simcoe County Active & Safe Routes to School program encompasses the communities of Collingwood, Barrie, Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Angus, Midland, Orillia, and Penetanguishene, as well as smaller communities in between, for a total population of 352,227. The school districts serving this area are Simcoe County District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board for a total elementary and middle school student population of 78,000. There are also about 20 private schools in the area.

The school districts are the Toronto District School Board with 558 elementary schools and the Toronto Catholic District School Board with 170 elementary schools for a total elementary student population of 270,000.

The York Region program encompasses the municipalities of Newmarket, Markham, Aurora, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, and Whitchurch-Stouffville for a total population of 850,000. The school districts serving this area are York Region District School Board, York Region Catholic District School Board, and French Public and Catholic Boards for a total elementary and middle school student population of 100,000. There are also approximately 93 private schools in the area.

Haliburton County is a rural area about 2 hours north of Toronto. The villages of Haliburton and Minden are the main hubs, each with schools, and the hamlets of Cardiff and Wilberforce have smaller schools. The majority of students are bussed to school. Most schools participate in an annual school Walking Challenge in October, and in 2006, International Walk to School Day events were held in Haliburton and Cardiff. Partners in promoting Active and Safe Routes to School are the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, the A Communities in Action Committee, Haliburton schools of the Trillium Lakelands District School Board and community members.
